Bad Breath

Bad breath (Halitosis) can be a serious problem for many people.  There are many possible causes of bad breath.  Some of the most common causes are:

-Certain foods, such as Garlic

Volatile Sulfur Compounds, formed by Bacteria on the tongue

-Bad teeth and cavities

Gum disease (Periodontal disease) or dental abcess

-Dry Mouth

-Sinus infection or drainage

-Gastro esophageal disease (GERD)

-Smoking

-Diabetes or other systemic diseases.

Treatment for bad breath obviously depends on the underlying cause.  Many of the oral causes such as decay and gum disease can be treated with routine dental visits and proper oral hygiene.  Brushing, flossing and tongue scraping along with oral rinses are often enough to keep odors under control.

Other issues such as acid reflux, sinus or tonsil disease or diabetes could require medical attention.

If you have concerns about bad breath, see your dentist to help determine the cause.
