There’s an old saying “You don’t have to floss all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep”. It may sound a little silly, but there is some truth to it! According to the American Dental Association, only about half of adults floss daily.
As important as brushing is, flossing is vitally important in removing plaque that has accumulated between the teeth and in places that the toothbrush can’t reach. Plaque is the sticky layer comprised mostly of bacteria which causes tooth decay, gingivitis and leads to periodontal disease. Plaque begins to accumulate within hours of brushing. If not removed, plaque hardens and becomes tartar.
Plaque and tartar buildup and the bacteria present produce toxins which cause inflammation of the gums (gingivitis). Untreated gingivitis progresses to periodontal disease which can lead to teeth becoming loose and eventual tooth loss.
A Dentist or Dental Hygienist can remove plaque and tartar with special instruments. If you are concerned about gingivitis, periodontal disease or any other dental issues, contact Douglas Dental. Our location is convenient for Urbandale, Johnston and anywhere in the Des Moines Metro area.
